The No Surprises Act protects patients from unexpected medical bills, primarily for out-of-network services received at in-network facilities. However, for self-pay patients—those who pay out-of-pocket or are uninsured—the law requires healthcare providers to give a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of expected charges before services are provided. This estimate must be clear, itemized, and provided in writing. If the final bill is significantly higher than the estimate (by $400 or more), the patient has the right to dispute the charges through an independent resolution process. The goal is to promote price transparency and prevent unexpected financial burdens for self-pay patients.
